Australian Navy to join annual Malabar naval exercises alongside India, US, Japan

New Delhi: In a serious growth, Australia can be a part of the annual Malabar workouts that can happen within the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea in November, introduced the Ministry of Defence on Monday (October 19, 2020).

The official assertion mentioned, “As India seeks to increase cooperation with other countries in the maritime security domain and in the light of increased defence cooperation with Australia, Malabar 2020 will see the participation of the Australian Navy”

Malabar workouts will now have all 4 quad international locations as a part of the workouts specifically the United States, India, Japan and Australia.

The announcement comes weeks after Quad nation overseas ministers met in particular person in Tokyo.

The train can be ‘non-contact – at sea’ format and can strengthen the coordination between the Navies of the collaborating international locations, the Indian defence ministry launch mentioned.

Notably, the Malabar workouts began in 1992 as a bilateral Indian Navy-US Navy train and Japan joined the workouts in 2015.

In 2018, the train happened off the coast of Guam within the Philippine Sea and in 2019 off the coast of Japan.

The Indian defence ministry mentioned, “Participants of Exercise Malabar 2020 are engaging to enhance safety and security in the maritime domain.”

They added, “They collectively support free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and remain committed to a rules-based international order.”

The growth will increase eyebrows in Beijing that sees coming collectively of the Quad international locations suspiciously.
